About the summit

Global leaders gathered in Paris for the 2025 One Health World Microbiome Partnership Summit to place microbiomes at the center of planetary health. The Summit dove into innovative research, international collaboration, and strategies to use microbiomes for sustainable development and public health, including disease prevention.

On 20 June 2025, WMP Summit convened at the Académie Nationale de Médecine in Paris under the high patronage of the President of France, Emmanuel Macron. With the participation of the leadership from French leading research agencies (INRAE, Inserm, Pasteur Institute), the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH)and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Microbiomes at the Heart of One Health

Key discussions explored function and quality in microbiome samplingharmonization of data practices, and the creation of global microbiome databasesAccording to the speakers, it remains essential to identify the tipping points at which microbial activities shift from supporting (eco)system health and productive functions to driving degradation or collapse. This step is key to defining what constitutes a ‘healthy microbiome’ across systems.

Leaders, including Philippe Mauguin (INRAE), Didier Samuel (Inserm), and Emmanuelle Soubeyran (WOAH) called for coordinated global action, integrating socio-economic aspects and interdisciplinary research to curb climate change, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and emerging diseases.

“Microbiome is central to shaping One Health outcomes among animals and species. Our shared objective within One Health framework presents opportunities to take action” said the Director General of WOAH Emmanuelle Soubeyrand.”

7 working groups have been officially launched during the Summit, and the co-chairs presented their objectives that could be summarised as:

  • translate science into practical solutions,
  • strengthen training and capacity-building,
  • bridge the gap between innovation and policy.

The Summit concluded with a Paris Declaration calling to use microbiome research as a driver for sustainable development and planetary health. The WMP will continue to leverage the Paris Declaration across upcoming international forums, ensuring microbiome science remains central to One Health strategies.
